How To Conserve Electricity At Home?

From the bedroom to the bathroom and the kitchen to the living room, electricity is everywhere. While most homeowners do not know what is OFGEM, we are here to help. OFGEM is the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets and it regulates the organisations providing gas and electricity services to the consumers in the UK market. In this article, we take a look at how you can conserve electricity at home to minimise your overall electricity consumption at home.

Stop Electricity Stalkers

A lot of modern homes have appliances that are plugged in but not in use. For example, in the kitchen, you could have a microwave, toaster, and blender just to name a few appliances. Similarly, in the lounge, you could have multiple lamps, a stereo system, and a TV screen. All of these devices may be switched off but are still plugged into the wall socket.

All of these devices that are plugged in are still consuming electricity and increasing your electricity consumption even when they are switched off. Take a moment to comprehend how many appliances you might have at home in each room that are just plugged in and not being used. Instead of keeping all of these appliances constantly plugged in, only connect them to the wall socket when they are being used.

Take Notice Of Your Lightbulbs

Lightbulbs at home are one of the least efficient electrical appliances. A lightbulb is an electrical circuit that transforms electrical power to produce light. Most lightbulbs, in the process of producing light, also emit a large amount of heat. The heat is often wasted but still adds to your electricity consumption.

Look for energy-efficient lightbulbs the next time you go to the market to purchase a lightbulb.  Incandescent light bulbs waste 90% of the energy through heat. LED lights provide bright light without wasting energy. The lifespan of an LED light is also much longer than the incandescent lightbulb.

Reduce Dishwasher Usage

Tap water and modern soap play an integral role in keeping the dishes clean. Most crockery, including cups and silverware, can easily be cleaned with a bit of soap and water. Modern soaps even make the entire process easier. I know, but who has the time for that?

You will be rinsing the dishes anyway before putting them in the dishwasher. Why not go the full cycle and simply wash them by hand? It is understandable to put dishes in the dishwasher if you have large pots with grease stains. Using the dishwasher when it is not full wastes a lot of electricity and hot water.

It is recommended to use your dishwasher only when it is completely full if you do not want to waste electricity and hot water. This will give you a chance to put your Tetris abilities to practical use and stack up dishes in the dishwasher.

Do Not Leave Refrigerated Items Outside For Long

This might seem like traditional advice your parents gave you and for good reason too. The job of the refrigerator is to use electricity to maintain the air temperature inside the fridge. More or less electricity is used based on the temperature you choose. Whenever the refrigerator door opens some of that cool air escapes.

Putting warm items into the refrigerator means that the refrigerator will use more electricity to cool the items. Consider instantly putting items back into the refrigerator to help conserve electricity. This way the refrigerator does not have to work harder to cool the jug of milk that was left on the counter for so long.
